About Mercedes-Benz

One of the first ever car manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz has built its reputation on classy, stylish vehicles for professionals.

History of Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz, one of the most prestigious automobile brands in the world, has a history deeply intertwined with the very origins of the automobile itself. The company’s roots trace back to Karl Benz, who is credited with creating the first gasoline-powered automobile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, in 1886. Around the same time, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed another pioneering vehicle, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Mercedes-Benz.
The brand name "Mercedes" was first used in 1901 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), named after Mercedes Jellinek, the daughter of a prominent Austrian businessman who was heavily involved with the company. The Mercedes 35 HP, launched in 1901, was a groundbreaking car that set new standards for automotive design and performance.
In 1926, following the economic difficulties of World War I, DMG merged with Benz & Cie., Karl Benz’s company, to form Daimler-Benz AG. The new entity began producing cars under the brand name Mercedes-Benz, marking the official birth of the brand. The company quickly gained a reputation for luxury, innovation, and engineering excellence.
Throughout the 20th century, Mercedes-Benz introduced a series of iconic vehicles that cemented its status as a leader in the luxury car market. The 1930s saw the launch of the Mercedes-Benz 540K, a symbol of pre-war luxury and elegance. In the 1950s, the company introduced the legendary 300 SL "Gullwing," famous for its distinctive doors and pioneering fuel injection technology.
Mercedes-Benz also played a significant role in motorsports, achieving success in Formula 1 and endurance racing, further enhancing its reputation for performance and engineering.
The brand's commitment to safety and innovation is evident in its long history of pioneering automotive technologies, such as the development of the crumple zone in the 1950s and the introduction of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) in the 1970s.
Today, Mercedes-Benz is part of the Daimler AG group and continues to lead in the luxury automobile market with a diverse range of vehicles, from sedans and SUVs to high-performance sports cars. The company is also at the forefront of the transition to electric mobility, with its EQ line of electric vehicles, and continues to innovate in areas like autonomous driving and connectivity, staying true to its motto, "The Best or Nothing."
