The expense associated with buying and running an environmentally-friendly vehicle is one of the main reasons preventing people from going green, it has been claimed.
According to new research from TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk, many Britons find the cost of going green to be prohibitive, particularly during the current economic downturn.
The government has sought to encourage more motorists to replace their existing old vehicles with more environmentally-friendly ones by offering a £2,000 incentive to have their aging cars scrapped through the scrappage scheme.
However, buying eco-friendly vehicles is not top of most people's list, the website found, because the expense involved means most would prefer to buy a cheaper, more polluting model.
Many people are choosing to purchase used cars during the recession in a bid to cut the amount they are spending on new vehicles.
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced the scrappage incentive scheme in his Budget speech earlier this year.
So far the initiative has encouraged 35,000 motorists to replace their old vehicles with more modern versions, according to a recent report from the BBC.
